Carey Mulligan: “It Girl”? No. Oscar Nominee? Yes!

Carey Mulligan

Carey Mulligan is by far a gifted thespian, worthy of Oscar and Golden Globe nominations. However, Mulligan, an “It Girl”? No.

CNN’s Matthew Carey wrote an article coining Carey Mulligan the next “It Girl”, a ploy, in attempt to deceive the public into thinking that Ms. Mulligan is a “Sex Symbol”. She is an unknown to the young hip demographic and this article does very little to introduce her. The proof is in the pudding; Carey Mulligan is just not an “It Girl”.

“It Girl” according to wikipedia is “a charming, sexy young woman who receives intense media coverage unrelated or disproportional to personal achievements. The reign of an "It girl" is usually temporary; some of the rising "It Girls" will either become full-fledged celebrities or their popularity will fade.” Past "It Girls" include Halle Berry, Angelina Jolie, Sarah Jessica Parker and Gwyneth Paltrow who have all went on to become full-fledged celebrities in their own right. Current “It Girls” include Anne Hathaway, Megan Fox, Scarlett Johansson and Oliva Wild. “It Girls” have this commonality about them, they are sexy and sassy, something that cannot be taught or learned. “It Girls” grace the covers of sexy trendy magazines such as Maxim, GQ, Elle and Esquire and star in flashy blockbusters like Transformers as current “It Girl’ Megan Fox has done. The bottom line is that “It Girls” are HOT!!

Britain’s Carey Mulligan is quite the star amongst the senior crowd, staring in Oscar worthy classic period films such as  Pride and the Prejudice and An Education. MilordSuccotash would describe Carey as an Indie Darling, a soft-spoken delightful talented actress. Reminiscent of a young Meryl Streep, Mulligan could have a long Oscar winning respectable career full of flowerly dramas and tea. Mulligan, a clever yet average looking British girl is comfortable in her shoes, its unfortunate she is swimming in a sea of sharks (agents/pr executives) who’s greedy desires are only for the sake of fat checks. These execs use old smoke & mirrors tricks in hopes for significant dividends. In this case unwarrantedly placing the term “It Girl” onto Carey who clearly defies the “It” characteristics.

CNN’s “It Girl” article on Mulligan was written without merit in hopes of a big payday for her brand.  Paparazzi coverage coupled with attractive, provocative “It Girls or Guys” are the formula to start a celebrity multifaceted money-making brand. Meaning, the “It” stage starts the process in becoming a sought after celebrity, which leads to opportunities such as endorsement deals, celebrity fragrances, and clothing lines. Ms. Mulligan isn’t that girl and it is sad to see her being thrown inorganically towards this direction when clearly it will not work. This will have an adverse affect, not only will she loose her audience but the market her handlers are going after will see right through the smoke. One cannot trick the consumer; Shakespeare said it best,  “to thine own self be true”. For Carey Mulligan this is sticking to her craft, acting.

Mighty! Milord! Without Sucka! Succotash!

Great article and very well written. Looks like Milord will be around for a while and i agree she's not an "it Girl" but a very good actress.
